Anti -LGBT Bullying in Schools: Chris Kyriacou.

It was sad to read on the morning of 19 November 2020, during anti-bullying week, that the “Schools Anti-LGBT Bullying Challenge Project” will no longer be funded by the government.

We are now well into the 21st century, and bullying in schools (and in the wider community) is still widespread. Two research reports on workplace bullying published this week by the Anti-Bullying Centre at Dublin City University, illustrates how bullying permeates all aspects of society. More recent attention has been paid to how those who bully at schools may later become perpetrators of domestic abuse.
The bullying of LGBT pupils is immensely distressing, and we must continue to explore and implement ways it can be reduced. As a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Bullying, we have very much focused on how schools and education can and must play a part in helping, supporting and educating bullies to stop bullying others. Failure to do so, means that school bullies often continue to be bullies in adulthood, and their victims continue to suffer.

  1. The government withdrawal of funding chimes in well with the PMs new definition of bullying as ‘unintentional’in the case of Priti Patel. It betokens a lack of interest in bullying that is woeful bearing in mind the incidence of the issue in all aspects of our society especially government.
